We take on garden waste removal right across Halifax and its HX1, HX2 and HX3 postcodes, from Ovenden and Warley to Illingworth, plus nearby Elland, Sowerby Bridge and Brighouse. We visit, measure and talk through the options with you first, then send a written, itemised quote for your Halifax garden.

Green waste piles up faster than any council bin can take it. Hedge trimmings, a heap of leaves, a branch brought down in a gale, the old turf from a lawn you have just dug up: all of it has to go somewhere, and most of it will not fit in a hatchback. Halifax Landscaping & Driveways collects and disposes of garden waste across Halifax as a registered waste carrier, with a tipper van, a chipper and a crew used to lifting it. The service is for homeowners who have done the cutting themselves, for anyone clearing a garden after a storm or a house move, and for customers who want a regular collection after our own maintenance visits.

We treat it as more than a skip on wheels. Branches are chipped so they pack small and can be left as mulch if you want. Leaves, prunings and grass are kept separate from soil, rubble and general rubbish, because each has its own disposal route and mixing them costs you more. Anything that should not travel with green waste, such as Japanese knotweed or treated timber, is identified and handled correctly. Every collection in Halifax comes with a waste transfer note so you have proof that it was disposed of legally.

Leaf Removal

From late October until December, leaf removal is the job most gardens need. Leaves left on a lawn smother the grass and encourage moss; on paving they turn into a slippery brown skin; in gullies and gutters they block the flow and send water where it should not go. The service is the right choice if you have mature trees in or near the garden, if you cannot keep up with the volume, or if leaves are collecting somewhere that matters, such as a drain or a flat roof.

We use petrol and battery blowers to move leaves into rows, rakes for beds and corners, and a leaf vacuum on larger lawns that shreds as it collects, which cuts the volume by two thirds. Gullies, drain grates and accessible gutters are cleared by hand. Leaves are then bagged in builder's bags or loaded loose into the van.

Not every leaf is waste. If you have a corner for a leaf-mould cage, we can leave some to rot down into a free mulch for the following year. Diseased leaves from roses, horse chestnuts or fruit trees are always removed to limit the spread of fungal problems. What affects the job is the number and type of trees, the size of lawn, and whether we are collecting once or coming back fortnightly through the season for gardens under big oaks or planes, which drop over many weeks.

Fallen Branch Removal

Wind, wet snow and old age bring branches down, and they rarely fall somewhere convenient. Fallen branch removal covers limbs on the lawn, across a path, on a shed roof, against a fence or tangled in a hedge. It is the right call after any storm in Halifax.

We cut the branch into manageable sections with a chainsaw or pruning saw, starting from the tip so the weight comes off in stages and nothing springs or rolls. Brash under about 75 mm is fed through the chipper. Timber above that is cut to log length and either stacked for your firewood, if you want it, or taken away. We clear the smaller debris with rakes and a blower so the lawn is not left full of twigs that will blunt a mower.

While we are there we look up. A branch that has failed often leaves a torn stub or a hanging limb that could follow it, and we tell you if the tree needs a tree surgeon rather than a landscaper. If the tree is covered by a preservation order or stands in a conservation area, removing fallen wood is fine, but any cutting of live growth needs the council's consent first, and we will say so. What affects the work is the size of the timber, where it has landed, whether it has damaged anything, and access for getting it out.

Green Waste Removal

Green waste removal is the general collection service: hedge clippings, prunings, grass cuttings, old turf, dead plants, spent annuals, weeds, compost from emptied pots, and the overgrown heap at the end of the garden that has been quietly growing since the previous owner. It suits anyone who has had a big weekend in the garden, anyone midway through a landscaping job of their own, and letting agents clearing a plot between tenants in Halifax.

We load by hand and by fork into builder's bags or straight onto the van. Woody prunings go through the chipper first to reduce volume. Turf and soil are kept separate from green material, as they are classed differently and composting facilities will not take a mixed load. General rubbish that turns up in the pile, such as plastic pots, broken fencing and old carpet, is sorted out and disposed of through the correct stream. Treated timber and anything painted never goes with green waste.

Everything green ends up at a licensed composting facility rather than in landfill. You get a waste transfer note for your records, which matters for landlords and anyone who has had problems with fly-tipping in the past. What affects it is the volume, how much sorting is needed, how far it has to be carried, and whether we are also doing the cutting.

Why Choose Us for Garden Waste Removal in Halifax

Anyone with a van can offer to take your garden waste. Fewer are registered waste carriers who can give you a transfer note, and fewer still are landscapers who know what should and should not be in the load. Halifax Landscaping & Driveways is both. We recognise Japanese knotweed, giant hogweed and other controlled plants before they are mixed into a van full of hedge clippings, and we keep soil, rubble and rubbish out of the green stream so it can actually be composted.

We bring a chipper, which makes a difference on anything woody. A branch pile that would fill two skips packs into a corner of the van once it has been through, and the chippings make a decent mulch if you want them left.

Collections in Halifax are quoted in writing, including disposal, so there are no surprises at the tip. We work alongside our Seasonal Garden Clearance and Overgrown Garden Clearance services, so if what starts as a pile turns out to be a whole garden, we can take that on too. Every job carries a written guarantee.

Garden Waste Removal: Step by Step

  1. Tell us what you have. A photo or two of the pile and a note on access lets us estimate volume and bring the right vehicle.
  2. Written quote. We confirm a price in writing, including disposal and any chipping, and book a date.
  3. Protect the route. Sheeting goes down through the house or along the side path where needed.
  4. Sort. Green material, soil and turf, timber, and general rubbish are separated as we load, and anything controlled is set aside and discussed.
  5. Chip and load. Branches and woody prunings are chipped, everything else bagged or forked into the van.
  6. Sweep and leave. The area is raked and blown clean, and you receive a waste transfer note.

Most single collections in Halifax are done in an hour or two. Larger loads, or anything involving a lot of chipping, may take a morning. Regular customers set up a schedule and we simply turn up.

How Garden Waste Removal Is Priced in Halifax

Volume is the main driver, measured roughly in builder's bags or van loads. A dozen bags of hedge clippings is a quick job; a mixed heap that has been building for years in a Halifax garden is several loads and a lot of sorting. Weight matters too: soil and turf are far heavier than leaves and are disposed of differently, so a load with a lot of earth in it costs more.

How mixed the pile is affects the time. Pure green waste can be loaded straight in; a heap containing plastic pots, bricks, old fence panels and a buried paddling pool has to be sorted into separate streams. Woody material is cheaper to move once chipped, but chipping takes time.

Access counts: waste carried through a house or up steps takes longer than waste wheeled to a van parked at the gate. Parking restrictions near the property can add time. Finally, whether we are also doing the cutting, and whether the collection is a one-off or part of a regular arrangement, changes the quote. Everything is set out in writing before we start.

Garden Waste Removal Across Halifax

We collect garden waste from every part of Halifax. If your garden in Ovenden or Skircoat sits under mature trees, our autumn leaf removal runs from October to December. If your garden in Warley or Illingworth has no side access, we carry everything through for you. In King Cross much of the work is storm debris and clippings from hedges and lawns. We also cover nearby Elland, Sowerby Bridge and Brighouse, and regular pickups can be set up wherever you are.

Many customers combine this with overgrown garden clearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you a registered waste carrier?

Yes. Halifax Landscaping & Driveways is registered to carry waste, and every collection comes with a waste transfer note. That matters because the householder is legally responsible for where their waste ends up, and using an unregistered carrier who fly-tips can leave you facing the consequences.

Can you take soil, rubble and old fence panels as well as green waste?

We can, but they are separate waste streams. Soil and rubble are heavy and go to a different facility from compostable green waste; treated timber and fence panels are different again. We sort as we load and quote for each type, which is cheaper than paying for a mixed load that cannot be composted.

Will you take Japanese knotweed away?

Not with ordinary garden waste. Knotweed is controlled waste and every fragment can regrow, so it must not be chipped, mixed or taken to a composting site. If we find it in a pile we set it aside, tell you, and explain the licensed treatment and disposal route. The rest of the waste is collected as normal.

Can I keep the wood chippings or logs?

Yes. Branches we chip can be left in a pile or spread as mulch on beds and paths, and logs from fallen branches can be cut to length and stacked for your stove. Just say so when we quote and we will leave what you want, removing only the rest.

How much notice do you need for a collection in Halifax?

A few days is usually enough for a standard pickup, and after a storm we try to prioritise fallen branches that are blocking access or resting on structures. Send a photo of the pile with your enquiry so we can quote accurately and bring the right vehicle and the chipper if needed.
